Nell Haynes argues that social media is a place where Alto Hospicio’s residents – or Hospiceños – express their feelings of marginalisation that result from living in city far from the national capital, and with a notoriously low quality of life compared to other urban areas in Chile. In actively distancing themselves from residents in cities such as Santiago, Hospiceños identify as marginalised citizens, and express a new kind of social norm. Yet Haynes finds that by contrasting their own lived experiences with those of people in metropolitan areas, Hospiceños are strengthening their own sense of community and the sense of normativity that shapes their daily lives. This exciting conclusion is illustrated by the range of social media posts about personal relationships, politics and national citizenship, particularly on Facebook. 2016-12-31 23:55:55 2019-01-11 13:45:08 2020-04-01T14:16:43Z 2020-04-01T14:16:43Z 2016 book 609771 OCN: 987704012 9781910634578 9781910634585 9781910634608 9781910634615 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32690 eng Why We Post application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 609771.pdf https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press/browse-books/social-media-in-northern-chile UCL Press 10.14324/111.9781910634592 10.14324/111.9781910634592 df73bf94-b818-494c-a8dd-6775b0573bc2 7292b17b-f01a-4016-94d3-d7fb5ef9fb79 9781910634578 9781910634585 9781910634608 9781910634615 European Research Council (ERC) 224 295486 SOCNET FP7 Ideas: European Research Council FP7-IDEAS-ERC - Specific Programme: "Ideas" Implementing the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007 to 2013) open access
