Περίληψη:In the spring of 2016 a series of seminar lectures on ghost appearances in archaic Greek epic and drama were held at the Department of Philology of Patras University; this was the occasion of a long discussion among colleagues about the relationship of the Upper- and the Underworld in archaic epic in particular. The discussion proved to be contagious: it soon affected the scientific board of the Centre for Odyssean Studies. We realized that although the issue of death had often been studied in Homeric scholarship, mainly in the '80s, with works like, for instance, by J. Griffin (Homer on Life and Death, 1980), S. Schein (The Mortal Hero, 1984), R. Garland (The Greek Way of Death, 1985) and later by Ch. Sourvinou-Inwood ("Reading" Greek Death, 1996), the relationship and communication between the two worlds, Upper and Under, had only occasionally been approached during the last decades and, therefore, it left a fertile field of further research. We were thus led to organize the 13th international Homer conference in Ithaca (summer 2017) on "The Upper and the Under World in Homeric and Archaic Epic". The idea found an enthusiastic support: numerous and interesting participations responded to our call for papers, high quality papers were given during the conference, rich and vivid discussions followed, friendly and convivial atmosphere was established. So it is with great pleasure that we publish today the proceedings of this fruitful meeting.
