Summary:Business information systems today is complex and multi-layered. This fact combined with the medley of architectures offered by various software manufacturers, the wide variety of technologies used, the alternative middleware technologies and the diverse terminology used, make the architecture of such a system very complex. Furthermore, an architecture like this should take into account IT systems and business modules like ERP, SCM, CRM, e-commerce, e-procurement, business intelligence etc. This chapter presents the basic elements of a software system architecture, the different architecture levels, the functionality of each level, the interfaces needed etc. On the top, the necessary information infrastructure in a modern enterprise will be presented, that refers to the integrated user management, the design of business processes, the integration of information, the development environment, etc.
