The main causes of thrombocytopenia are either a)decreased production in the bone marrow or b)increased destruction in peripheral blood ( hypersplenism, DIC, TTP, ITP).Coagulation factors deficiencies can either aquired or hereditary (Hemophilia A, Hemophilia B, von Willebrand disease). vWD is the most common inherited blood clotting disorder. Αιμορραγική διάθεση μπορεί να προέλθει από διαταραχές (α) των αγγείων, (β) της λειτουργικότητας των ΑΜΠ, (γ) του αριθμού των ΑΜΠ και (δ) του μηχανισμού της πήξης .Οι πιο συχνές διαταραχές λειτουργικότητας των ΑΜΠ, είναι οι επίκτητες (π.χ ουραιμία, παραπρωτεϊναιμία, λήψη αντιαιμοπεταλιακών φαρμάκων.) Για τη διάγνωση της Ιδιοπαθούς Θρομβοπενικής Πορφύρας (ΙΘΠ) πρέπει να λαμβάνονται υπ’ όψη και άλλες αιτίες θρομβοπενίας (Συστηματικός Ερυθηματώδης Λύκος, Ρευματοειδής αρθρίτις, Νόσος Graves, θυρεοειδίτις Hashimoto, Ιογενείς λοιμώξεις HCV, HIV, EBV, CMV, λοίμωξη από Helicobacter Pylori, Χρόνια λεμφογενής λευχαιμία (ΧΛΛ), λέμφωμα και διάφορα φάρμακα.
