Περίληψη:Transfusion Medicine studies all the processes involved in Transfusion and is an example of the cooperation between different disciplines More specifically it includes<br/>• Ensurong blood sufficiency (attract and retain blood donors)<br/>• assessement of donor suitability for blood donation (selection / exclusion criteria),<br/>• techniques of blood donation (donor safety, blood quantity and quality)<br/>• blood processing (additive solutions, preservatives, inactivation techniques, apheresis)<br/>• preparation of stable blood derivatives (albumin, clotting factors, immunoglobulins)<br/>• preparation of labile blood products (red cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelets)<br/>• compatibility testing (ABO, Rh),<br/>• pre- transfusion quality and safety control (infections transmitted by transfusion, microbiological tests, pH),<br/>• storage of blood products (temperature, time)<br/>• handling and disposal of blood products <br/>• assessing indications / contraindications for transfusion<br/>• monitoring and recording of adverse transfusion reactions (haemovigilance) <br/>• developing techniques to minimize risk of transfusion,<br/>• developing alternative transfusion methods<br/>• establishment of common standards and rules to ensure safety of both donors and recipients of blood (legislation, guidelines).
