As a rule, the initial finding is the progressive enlargement of one or more adjacent lymph nodes, which progressively involve other neighboring lymph node groups, and occasionally expand into the spleen, the bone marrow and other organs. On microscopy, the node sections reveal a varying number of large cells, with lymphoid characters and large blue nucleoli, which are dispersed among a stroma of lymphocytes, possibly eosinophils and evidence of mild inflammatory reaction. In many instances, the above picture is associated with specific syptoims such as fever (occasionally periodic), profuse sweating, unexplained loss of weight and severe pruritis. The extent of node involvement along with the presence of the above symptoms are useful for defining the prognosis of the patients and the type of appropriate therapy. The later comprises various combinations of cytostatic medications, complementary local radiation and, in the rare refractory cases, megatherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation. 2016-02-10T13:37:03Z 2021-07-08T12:55:56Z 2024-05-16T08:38:50Z 2016-02-10T13:37:03Z 2021-07-08T12:55:56Z 2024-05-16T08:38:50Z 2016-02-10 7 http://repository.kallipos.gr/handle/11419/3093 el 1 7 application/pdf |
