The fundamental forces which act in the atmosphere are the gravitational force, the frictional force and the pressure gradient force. Since atmospheric motions are studied in a non-inertial frame of reference that co-rotates with earth, the inertial, centrifugal and Coriolis, forces, are also included in the equation of motion. Selected topics of dynamic meteorology are studied, which refer mostly to large scale motions, which include: geostrophic winds, cyclonic and anticyclonic systems, subgeostrophic winds caused by frictional forces in the planetary boundary layer, and gradient winds that apply to tropical cyclones. In addition, the principle of thermal circulation in the atmosphere is discussed and applied in small (sea breeze) and large (planetary circulation) scale motions. Η ατμοσφαιρική δυναμική ασχολείται με τη μελέτη των κινήσεων των ατμοσφαιρικών μαζών, που διέπονται από τους νόμους διατήρησης της μάζας, της ορμής και της ενέργειας. Οι θεμελιώδεις δυνάμεις που ενεργούν στην ατμόσφαιρα είναι η δύναμη βαρύτητας, η δύναμη τριβής και η δύναμη βαροβαθμίδας (δύναμη βαθμίδας πίεσης). Επειδή η κίνηση μελετάται σε ένα μη αδρανειακό σύστημα αναφοράς που συμπεριστρέφεται με τη γη, στην μελέτη της κίνησης περιλαμβάνονται και αδρανειακές δυνάμεις που οφείλονται στην περιστροφή της γης, δηλαδή η φυγόκεντρος δύναμη και η δύναμη coriolis.
