Η ονομαστική και η αιτιατική συνδέονται με βασικούς συντακτικούς ρόλους των ουσιαστικών μέσα στην πρόταση, κατά συνέπεια η γνώση τους είναι σημαντική για την επικοινωνία. Το κεφάλαιο 3 εξετάζει τον σχηματισμό των νεοελληνικών ουσιαστικών σύμφωνα με την παράμετρο της πτώσης.
