This chapter focuses on the notions of language and grammar, and consists of 5 sections. The first two sections define the terms 'language' and 'grammar'. The third section defines grammar in both theoretical and descriptive terms. The fourth section defines syntax and its object of inquiry. The fifth section summarizes the discussion. Bibliography and exercises (with indicative answers) follow. This chapter is introductory and sets the background against which the dscussion (theoretical and empirical) of the following chapters is viewed. Its aim is to provide the theoretical framework and to familiarize the reader with the main theoretical notions and the syntactic methodology.
