The first two sections define the terms 'language' and 'grammar'. The third section defines grammar in both theoretical and descriptive terms. The fourth section defines syntax and its object of inquiry. The fifth section summarizes the discussion. Bibliography and exercises (with indicative answers) follow. This chapter is introductory and sets the background against which the dscussion (theoretical and empirical) of the following chapters is viewed. Its aim is to provide the theoretical framework and to familiarize the reader with the main theoretical notions and the syntactic methodology. To κεφάλαιο αυτό εστιάζει στο τι είναι γλώσσα και πώς ορίζεται η γραμματική. Αποτελείτα από 5 ενότητες. Οι δύο πρώτες ενότητες διευκρινίζουν τι είναι γλώσσα, ενώ η τρίτη ενότητα διευκρινίζει τι είναι γραμματική τόσο σε θεωρητικό όσο και σε περιγραφικό επίπεδο. Η τέταρτη ενότητα ορίζει το αντικείμενο της σύνταξης. Η πέμπτη ενότητα συνοψίζει τη συζήτηση. Ακολουθούν η βιβλιογραφία και κάποιες ενδεικτικές ασκήσεις με οδηγίες για την απάντησή τους. Το κεφάλαιο αυτό είναι εισαγωγικό και θέτει τη βάση πάνω στην οποία θα στηριχθεί η συζήτηση (θεωρητική και εμπειρική) των υπολοίπων κεφαλαίων.
