Περίληψη: | This chapter is also introductory and focuses on syntactic categories. It consists of seven sections. Section one introduces the two main parts of the sentence, namely the subject and the predicate. Section two introduces the notion of syntactic categories. Sections three and four consider the distinction between lexical and functional (or grammatical) categories. Section five examines the role of the lexicon in deriving crosslinguistics variation. Finally, sections six and seven introduce the notion of the constituent, the hierarchical structure of the sentence and its representation with tree-diagrams. These sections are followed by a summary, further reading, bibliography and exercises.
