The starting point can safely be set in the 7th century, for it was then when the settlement of the Slavs largely changed the ethnological character of the region, pinpointing the start of new era. This study ends in the 11th century when the dynamic of unifying the Balkan peninsula by Bulgarian agency came to an abrupt end giving its place to the Byzantine empire playing that role. Η μεσαιωνική περίοδος είναι καθοριστική για την ιστορία των Βαλκανίων δεδομένου ότι τότε συντελείται η εθνογένεση των περισσοτέρων βαλκανικών λαών, που στο εξής διακρίνονται από μία ιστορική παρουσία μέχρι την σήμερον. Στο προτεινόμενο εγχειρίδιο, η ιστορία των μεσαιωνικών Βαλκανίων εξετάζεται και στα βυζαντινά πλαίσια, αλλά και αφ’ εαυτής, με επικέντρωση στην ιστορία των κρατών, των κοινωνιών, και του πολιτισμού των βαλκανικών λαών, από τον 7ο μέχρι και τον 11ο αιώνα.<br/>Τα χρονολογικά όρια που ορίζουν την έκταση της μελέτης συνιστούν κορυφαίους ιστορικούς σταθμούς, που μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ότι ορίζουν με ιδιαίτερη σαφήνεια και ασφάλεια τα κατά περιπτώσεις συμβατικά όρια μιας μεγάλης ιστορικής περιόδου, όπως αυτή των «μέσων χρόνων». Η άφιξη και εγκατάσταση των Σλάβων στα Βαλκάνια κατά τον 7ο αιώνα συνιστά κορυφαίο ιστορικό φαινόμενο, που αλλάζει δραστικά τον εθνολογικό χαρακτήρα της περιοχής, και στο οποίο έχουν τις ιστορικές καταβολές τους οι περισσότεροι από τους λαούς των Βαλκανίων, όπως αυτοί καταγράφονται και στην σύγχρονη εποχή (Βούλγαροι, εθνότητες της πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβίας). Ουσιαστικά ο 7ος αιώνας επιφέρει την μέγιστη έως τότε ιστορική αλλαγή στην ιστορία της όλης περιοχής, όπως αυτή εξελισσόταν έως τότε.
