Time and persistent efficiency of European service and transport industry : a stochastic frontier analysis

In the present dissertation, using a recent methodological advancement by (S. C. Kumbhakar, Lien, et al. 2014), an attempt is made to estimate the overall, the permanent and the transient technical inefficiency in the field of services and transport. In short, permanent inefficiency refers to long-term problems facing a sector that are difficult enough to change. In contrast, transient inefficiency refers to short-term decisions and strategies that a sector follows and is much easier to change. The database we use is configured by us and its source are World Input-Output Database and European Commission, Joint Research Centre, July 2019 release. Regarding the results, we found that in the services sector there is great scope for improvements in overall efficiency. Nevertheless, this effort will certainly be arduous and difficult as the reforms that need to take place concern long-term operational problems. On the other hand, in terms of the results of the estimations of the efficiency in the transport sector, these are quite high, showing that the companies in this sector work almost perfectly efficiently. For the "absolute" maybe some small reforms, concerning the short-term period, should be made.
