Description
Summary:The focus of this thesis is the Multi Parallel optical DAC component. The MPoDAC is a component part of an optical transceiver. Optical transceivers are an integral part in the function of a Data Center (DC). Today’s optical transceivers function based on an electronic DAC accompanied by a DSP unit and drivers that increase the signals power before it gets to the photodiodes. The problem with today’s DACs lies in the bandwidth limitations of the DAC and the high energy consumption that the DSP unit introduces to the component. oDACs are meant to replace the outdated electrical DACs, they offer great bandwidth scalability and they do not require a DSP unit, thus making them much more energy efficient. In this thesis the conventional architecture, the parallel oDAC and the MPoDAC are directly compared in terms of energy efficiency and bit rate scalability.
