The goal of the study is to assess the difficulties and understanding of high school and first-year students about chemical transformation and more specific the ability to convert particulate pictures into the symbolic representation. A questionnaire was developed and given to hundreds of high school students and 120 university students. The questionnaire consisted in several parts; the questions asked relate mainly about the modelling process in chemistry as well as the attitude of students going from a semiotic register to another taking into account the macroscopic-microscopic duality of chemistry.
