He can be shown to espouse a Neoplatonic theory of images. This entails that truthful images are only possible of the Soul and the lower levels of the world, whereas the two highest hypostases cannot be grasped by language and man-made images. Even so, as the sun is an image of the highest principle, Macrobius’ reduction of all deities to the sun can be understood as a discourse on the highest deity, albeit obliquely. How are images, then, truthful? He defends a common theory of inspiration, according to which the creators of images participate in the Logos when creating them. Philosophy is seen as the primordial discipline, containing the knowledge necessary to create and interpret images. These conclusions allow us to pinpoint more precisely the differences between Middle and Neoplatonism. 2019-11-20 23:55 2020-01-07 16:47:06 2020-04-01T09:26:00Z 2020-04-01T09:26:00Z 2016 chapter 1006460 OCN: 1135844914 9783110516739; 9783110517040 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/23684 ger eng application/pdf n/a 65_[9783110517569 - Bilder] Theres.pdf De Gruyter Bilder von dem Einen Gott: Die Rhetorik des Bildes in monotheistischen Gottesdarstellungen der Spätantike 10.1515/9783110517569-006 10.1515/9783110517569-006 2b386f62-fc18-4108-bcf1-ade3ed4cf2f3 048f8fec-caf3-446b-9746-eaa2bca544b8 7292b17b-f01a-4016-94d3-d7fb5ef9fb79 9783110516739; 9783110517040 European Research Council (ERC) Berlin/Boston 313153 FP7 Ideas: European Research Council FP7-IDEAS-ERC - Specific Programme: "Ideas" Implementing the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007 to 2013) open access
