General Linguistics thema EDItEUR::C Language and Linguistics::CF Linguistics thema EDItEUR::C Language and Linguistics::CF Linguistics::CFA Philosophy of language In this article, the distribution of rare features among the world’s languages is investigated based on the data from the World Atlas of Language Structures (Haspelmath et al. 2005). A Rarity Index for a language is defined, resulting in a listing of the world’s languages by mean rarity. Further, a Group Rarity Index is defined to be able to measure average rarity of genealogical or areal groups. One of the most exceptional geographical areas turns out to be northwestern Europe. A closer investigation of the characteristics that make this area exceptional concludes this article. 2019-11-14 23:55 2020-01-07 16:47:06 2020-04-01T09:29:09Z 2020-04-01T09:29:09Z 2011 chapter 1006355 OCN: 1135844931 9783110219081 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/23785 eng application/pdf n/a 25_[9783110219098 - Expecting the Unexpected Exceptions in Grammar] Quantitative explorations.pdf De Gruyter Expecting the Unexpected: Exceptions in Grammar 10.1515/9783110219098.411 10.1515/9783110219098.411 2b386f62-fc18-4108-bcf1-ade3ed4cf2f3 7af7d5fc-0c78-4ac0-9c38-3eea55f19c38 7292b17b-f01a-4016-94d3-d7fb5ef9fb79 9783110219081 European Research Council (ERC) Berlin/Boston 240816 FP7 Ideas: European Research Council FP7-IDEAS-ERC - Specific Programme: "Ideas" Implementing the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007 to 2013) open access
