We first illustrate the phenomenon of subject inversion in Italian wh-questions (§ 2). In Section 3, we present the results of a syntactic experiment on the distribution of subjects in the embed-ded clause of wh-questions. Our analysis is presented in Section 4, where we directly relate the syntactic and prosodic peculiarities of Italian wh-questions to the successive cyclic nature and to the intermediate positions of wh-movement. We show that while subject inversion is a phenomenon that involves the edge of the C-phrase, the assignment of NPA additionally involves the vP-edge. We then attempt to capture the observed patterns and to provide further support to our analysis by comparing direct and indirect wh-questions with respect to both subject inversion and their prosodic properties (§ 5). A summary and some final remarks close the chapter. 2019-11-14 23:55 2020-01-07 16:47:06 2020-04-01T09:29:27Z 2020-04-01T09:29:27Z 2018 chapter 1006338 OCN: 1135850114 9781501515347; 9781501506635 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/23801 eng application/pdf n/a 86_[9781501506734 - From Sounds to Structures] Postverbal subjects.pdf De Gruyter From Sounds to Structures: Beyond the Veil of Maya 10.1515/9781501506734-017 10.1515/9781501506734-017 2b386f62-fc18-4108-bcf1-ade3ed4cf2f3 c6c6b016-cdb0-44b6-b020-1f60dc20456a 7292b17b-f01a-4016-94d3-d7fb5ef9fb79 9781501515347; 9781501506635 European Research Council (ERC) Berlin/Boston 340297 FP7 Ideas: European Research Council FP7-IDEAS-ERC - Specific Programme: "Ideas" Implementing the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (2007 to 2013) open access
