This volume takes an unprecedented look at this type of linkage across languages and shows that there exist three distinct variants, all subsumed under the hypernym bridging constructions. The chapters highlight the defining features of these constructions in the grammar and their functional properties in discourse. The volume reveals that: Bridging constructions consist of two clauses: a reference clause and a bridging clause. Across languages, bridging clauses can be subordinated clauses, reduced main clauses, or main clauses with continuation prosody. Bridging constructions have three variants: recapitulative linkage, summary linkage and mixed linkage. They differ in the formal makeup of the bridging clause. 2019-04-18 23:55 2020-03-10 03:00:38 2020-04-01T10:31:37Z 2020-04-01T10:31:37Z 2019-03-14 book 1004855 OCN: 1100489720 2363-5568 9783961101412 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/25239 eng Studies in Diversity Linguistics application/pdf n/a 1004855.pdf Language Science Press 10.5281/zenodo.2563698 104797 10.5281/zenodo.2563698 0bad921f-3055-43b9-a9f1-ea5b2d949173 b818ba9d-2dd9-4fd7-a364-7f305aef7ee9 9783961101412 Knowledge Unlatched (KU) Berlin 104797 Language Science Press 2018 - 2020 Knowledge Unlatched open access
