The idea of the social construction of death has been taken on board, albeit slowly, by the social and cultural study of death, but explicit reflections on the underlying ontologies and epistemologies of this paradigm remain scarce. This edited volume aims to strengthen the paradigmatic reflections about the social construction of death in thanatology and contribute to a theoretical reinforcement of the field. It also puts death and dying more explicitly on the agenda of social constructionist and social constructivist research in general, arguing that the study of death is important for these approaches. The thirteen contributions gathered in this volume, written by well-established scholars from a variety of disciplines (including sociology, anthropology, media and cultural studies, and political sciences), theorise the social construction of death and dying, and deploy it to analyse a wide variety of meaning-making practices in societal fields such as ethics, politics, media, medicine and family. 2020-03-18 13:36:15 2020-04-01T12:40:08Z 2014-12-01 23:55 2020-03-18 13:36:15 2020-04-01T12:40:08Z 2020-04-01T12:40:08Z 2014 chapter 1000041 OCN: 1076788413 9781137391926;9781137391919 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/29912 eng application/pdf Attribution 4.0 International 1000041.pdf http://www.palgrave.com/page/detail/the-social-construction-of-death-leen-van-brussel/?K=9781137391902 Springer Nature The Social Construction of Death Palgrave Macmillan 10.1057/9781137391 10.1057/9781137391 6c6992af-b843-4f46-859c-f6e9998e40d5 f6128b82-b0dc-499c-8df8-dcb57e135953 d859fbd3-d884-4090-a0ec-baf821c9abfd 9781137391926;9781137391919 Wellcome Palgrave Macmillan 296 Basingstoke 12 097829 Wellcome Trust Wellcome open access
