It has been translated from the French original into German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, and now at long last into English as well. The volume contains a comprehensive approach to the syntax of natural languages, an approach that is foundational for an entire stream in the modern study of syntax and grammar. This stream is known today as dependency grammar (DG). Drawing examples from dozens of languages, many of which he was proficient in, Tesnière presents insightful analyses of numerous phenomena of syntax. Among the highlights are the concepts of valency and head-initial vs. head-final languages. These concepts are now taken for granted by most modern theories of syntax, even by phrase structure grammars, which represent, in a sense, the opposite sort of approach to syntax from what Tesnière was advocating. 2018-01-01 23:55:55 2020-03-13 03:00:32 2020-04-01T13:08:38Z 2020-04-01T13:08:38Z 2015-02-11 book 643257 OCN: 904398341 9789027212122 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/30722 eng application/pdf n/a 643257.pdf https://doi.org/10.1075/z.185 John Benjamins Publishing Company 10.1075/z.185 101204 10.1075/z.185 fa292f4b-9794-4566-9eff-4d0f5e4a08e9 b818ba9d-2dd9-4fd7-a364-7f305aef7ee9 9789027212122 Knowledge Unlatched (KU) 101204 KU Select 2017: Backlist Collection Knowledge Unlatched open access
