The few in which high-intensity fighting continues for years bring about a disproportionate amount of death and suffering. What separates these few unusually long and intense wars from the many conflicts that are far less destructive? In Logics of War, Alex Weisiger tests three explanations for a nation’s decision to go to war and continue fighting regardless of the costs. He combines sharp statistical analysis of interstate wars over the past two centuries with nine narrative case studies. He examines both well-known conflicts like World War II and the Persian Gulf War, as well as unfamiliar ones such as the 1864–1870 Paraguayan War (or the War of the Triple Alliance), which proportionally caused more deaths than any other war in modern history. 2018-01-24 23:55 2017-12-01 23:55:55 2020-03-10 03:00:32 2020-04-01T13:13:13Z 2020-04-01T13:13:13Z 2013-03-13 book 642713 OCN: 836207133 9780801468179;9780801468162 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/30789 eng Cornell Studies in Security Affairs application/pdf n/a 642713.pdf Cornell University Press 10.7591/cornell/9780801451867.001.0001 101542 10.7591/cornell/9780801451867.001.0001 06a447d4-1d09-460f-8b1d-3b4b09d64407 b818ba9d-2dd9-4fd7-a364-7f305aef7ee9 9780801468179;9780801468162 Knowledge Unlatched (KU) Ithaca, NY 101542 KU Select 2017: Backlist Collection Knowledge Unlatched open access |
