It analyses thirty-six seasons of archaeological excavation directed by such iconic figures as Sir William St John Hope, Sir Charles Peers, Sir Alfred Clapham and Dr Courtenay Arthur Ralegh Radford, and reveals new insights into the abbey’s origins and historical development. Previous interpretations are challenged and new evidence is presented for the Saxon and later medieval phases of the abbey, including an important complex of early glass-working furnaces, dated c 700. The study reveals, for the first time, archaeological evidence for the Norman and later medieval monastic ranges and the luxurious abbot’s hall and court. 2016-12-31 23:55:55 2018-10-31 19:03:41 2020-04-01T13:57:06Z 2020-04-01T13:57:06Z 2015 book 619339 OCN: 1030816192 9780854313006 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/32051 eng application/pdf n/a 619339.pdf http://www.oxbowbooks.com/oxbow/glastonbury-abbey-47990.html Society of Antiquaries of London 10.26530/OAPEN_619339 10.26530/OAPEN_619339 d42419c2-5275-411b-8855-aed87bed3f71 8639ebc8-cfee-40e2-ad1c-fc6ad4847945 9780854313006 504 AH/G010269/1 Arts and Humanities Research Council; Linda Witherill, Witherill Foundation, New Hampshire, USA; the Society for Medieval Archaeology; the Maltwood Fund of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society; the University of Reading open access
