UNESCO's Bioethics Programme was established to address such issues in 1993. Since then, it has adopted three declarations on human genetics and bioethics (1997, 2003 and 2005), set up numerous training programmes around the world and debated the need for an international convention on human reproductive cloning. Negotiating Bioethics presents Langlois' research on the negotiation and implementation of the three declarations and the human cloning debate, based on fieldwork carried out in Kenya, South Africa, France and the UK, among policy-makers, geneticists, ethicists, civil society representatives and industry professionals. The book examines whether the UNESCO Bioethics Programme is an effective forum for (a) decision-making on bioethics issues and (b) ensuring ethical practice. Considering two different aspects of the UNESCO Bioethics Programme - deliberation and implementation - at international and national levels, Langlois explores: - how relations between developed and developing countries can be made more equal - who should be involved in global level decision-making and how this should proceed - how overlap between initiatives can be avoided - what can be done to improve the implementation of international norms by sovereign states - how far universal norms can be contextualized - what impact the efficacy of national level governance has at international level Drawing on extensive empirical research, Negotiating Bioethics presents a truly global perspective on bioethics 2014-12-31 23:55:55 2019-11-28 16:12:32 2020-04-01T14:43:16Z 2020-04-01T14:43:16Z 2013 book 478071 OCN: 858861437 9780203101797 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/33408 eng application/pdf n/a 478071.pdf http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415533461/ Taylor & Francis Routledge 10.4324/9780203101797 10.4324/9780203101797 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb 37918d06-7ca8-4701-8b10-7ae474d66407 b20cd8be-7815-42ac-901d-ed8184d19c29 8faac6ab-b8a1-4438-a851-b411141a14ec 92568de0-3be1-4ccc-be45-56994321cbe9 ecf06a63-c83b-44fe-84ee-1c9a401d5f23 c230dc18-8a8b-40d1-a7e3-cfd01e23b246 0c06ace7-a77a-4d54-8ec3-a0d9a450c640 c691235d-2176-443f-9a8e-8ad7f2bd9963 a355514b-8eea-406a-b8e0-e0c773e4c6d5 f225b8b9-96c6-4659-93ab-5148cbe46c02 79e7ccfb-652a-4216-a564-786e2717160b 4d4a14ee-f085-424d-94ff-54fc7f53459f fc002b35-4a46-4abe-93a7-2ee4722e1019 d859fbd3-d884-4090-a0ec-baf821c9abfd 9780203101797 Wellcome Routledge 192 075315 Wellcome Trust Wellcome open access
