Jahrhundert in Wien vollzogene Übergang von einer höfischen Sammlung zum öffentlichen Kunstmuseum ist Bestandteil eines komplexen historischen Prozesses: Ausgehend von der exemplarischen Situation der kaiserlichen Galerie wird dieser museumsgeschichtliche Umbruch im Vergleich mit anderen wichtigen Schauplätzen in Europa untersucht und auf seine institutions- und mediengeschichtlichen Implikationen befragt.
