This book focuses on a series of minor collections that have received little or no scholarly attention, including the Epitome of the Seventh Century, the Excerpta Anonymi (tenth century), the Excerpta Salmasiana (eighth to eleventh centuries), and the Excerpta Planudea (thirteenth century). Three aspects of these texts are analysed in detail: their method of redaction, their literary structure, and their cultural and political function. Combining codicological, literary, and political analyses, this study contributes to a better understanding of the intertwining of knowledge and power, and suggests that these collections of historical excerpts should be seen as a Byzantine way of rewriting history. 2020-05-15T11:58:36Z 2020-05-15T11:58:36Z 2020 book 9781000068719 9780429351020 9780367367305 9780367496456 http://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/37744 eng Routledge Research in Byzantine Studies application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9780367367305_text.pdf https://www.routledge.com/Rewriting-History-in-Byzantium-A-Critical-Study-of-Collections-of-Historical/Manafis/p/book/9780367367305 Taylor & Francis Routledge 10.4324/9780429351020 10.4324/9780429351020 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb 0451801c-10ea-4012-af00-886bc64cc4d0 University of Birmingham 9781000068719 9780429351020 9780367367305 9780367496456 Routledge 372 770816 CATENA University of Birmingham open access
