Relying on different indicators, it demonstrates an important transformation in the class basis of social democracy. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the working-class vote is strongly fragmented and social democratic parties face competition on multiple fronts for their core electorate – and not only from radical right parties. Starting from a reflection on ‘working-class parties’ and using a sophisticated class schema, the book paints a nuanced and diversified picture of the trajectory of social democracy that goes beyond a simple shift from working-class to middle-class parties. Following a detailed description, the book reviews possible explanations of workers' new voting patterns and emphasizes the crucial changes in parties' ideologies. It closes with a discussion on the role of the working class in social democracy's future electoral strategies. 2020-08-13T11:53:42Z 2020-08-13T11:53:42Z 2020 book ONIX_20200813_9783030462390_23 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/41281 eng Challenges to Democracy in the 21st Century application/pdf n/a 2020_Book_SocialDemocraticPartiesAndTheW.pdf https://www.springer.com/9783030462390 Springer Nature Palgrave Macmillan 10.1007/978-3-030-46239-0 10.1007/978-3-030-46239-0 6c6992af-b843-4f46-859c-f6e9998e40d5 178e65b9-dd53-4922-b85c-0aaa74fce079 European Research Council (ERC) Palgrave Macmillan 111 741538 H2020 European Research Council H2020 Excellent Science - European Research Council open access
