This anthology contributes to a historically grounded understanding of the complex relationship between Christian missions and the roots of humanitarianism and its contemporary uses in a Middle Eastern context. Contributions focus on ideologies, rhetoric, and practices of missionaries and their apostolates towards humanitarian-ism, from the mid-19th century Middle East crises, examining di ferent missionaries, their society’s worldview and their networks in various areas of the Middle East. In the early 20th century Christian missions increasingly paid more attention to organ-isation and bureaucratisation (‘rationalisation’), and media became more important to their work. The volume seeks to discover and retrace such ‘entangled histories’ for the rst time in an integral perspective. Readership: Those interested in the modern and contemporary history of the Middle East, in religious studies, international relations, scholars, students and practitioners of humanitarianism. 2020-10-13T12:27:53Z 2020-10-13T12:27:53Z 2020 book ONIX_20201013_9789004434530_6 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/42534 eng Leiden Studies in Islam and Society application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International 9789004434530.pdf https://brill.com/abstract/title/54485 Brill BRILL 10.1163/9789004434530 10.1163/9789004434530 af16fd4b-42a1-46ed-82e8-c5e880252026 da087c60-8432-4f58-b2dd-747fc1a60025 Dutch Research Council (NWO) BRILL 11 316 Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research open access
