A great part of maritime unmanned systems developed did not target such application, being more focused on environmental monitoring, surveillance or defence. In opposition to these applications, search and rescue operations need to take into account relevant issues such as the presence of people or other vessels on the water. Building upon user requirements and overall integrated components for assisted rescue and unmanned search operations (ICARUS) system architecture, this chapter addresses the development of unmanned maritime systems. It starts with an overview of the approach where a two‐tier solution was adopted to address safety issues and then proceeds to detail each of the developed technologies. 2021-06-02T10:10:04Z 2021-06-02T10:10:04Z 2017 chapter ONIX_20210602_10.5772/intechopen.69492_345 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/49231 eng application/pdf n/a 56139.pdf InTechOpen 10.5772/intechopen.69492 10.5772/intechopen.69492 09f6769d-48ed-467d-b150-4cf2680656a1 FP7-SEC-2011-1 285417 open access
