Based on a detailed analysis of Richardson’s work, this book maintains that he sought both to uphold hierarchical concepts of individual duty, and to warn of the consequences if such hierarchies were abused. In his final novel, Richardson aimed at a synthesis between social hierarchy and individual liberty, patriarchy and female self-fulfilment. His work, albeit rooted in patriarchal values, paved the way for proto-feminist conceptions of female character. 2021-07-08T11:28:34Z 2021-07-08T11:28:34Z 2020 book ONIX_20210708_9783772057311_96 9783772057311 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/49895 eng Schweizer Anglistische Arbeiten / Swiss Studies in English application/pdf Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International 9783772057311.pdf https://elibrary.narr.digital/book/10.2357/9783772057311 Narr Francke Attempto Verlag 10.2357/9783772057311 10.2357/9783772057311 daa35312-955c-4b08-ad63-34f8dc157eab 07f61e34-5b96-49f0-9860-c87dd8228f26 9783772057311 Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) 147 Tübingen 10BP12_199489 Open Access Books One Great Family: Domestic Relationships in Samuel Richardson's Novels Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung Swiss National Science Foundation open access
