This chapter examines networks from the angle of institutional differentiation – an inherent trait of these organisations – in order to expand the analysis of this phenomenon beyond its state-centric confines. The chapter also adds to the study of (differentiated) integration more traditionally defined, both by analogy and insofar as networks are part and parcel of the EU’s system of multi-level governance. Building on original empirical data, we identify three dimensions of differentiation generated by networks – “insider-outsider”, “compound”, and “multi-level” differentiation – and discuss their implications for the efficiency, effectiveness and legitimacy of networks’ actions. Based on our analysis, we also sketch some avenues for future research connecting the national and sub-national dimensions of differentiation in Europe. 2022-05-18T09:03:18Z 2022-05-18T09:03:18Z 2022 chapter 9780367149659 9781032183824 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/54474 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9780367149659_10.4324_9780429054136-35.pdf Taylor & Francis The Routledge Handbook of Differentiation in the European Union Routledge 10.4324/9780429054136-39 10.4324/9780429054136-39 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb bf22aad4-e60f-4ea5-bffd-d7ce9e66baa4 4ff5e103-721b-437d-be4e-40fdfb887da3 9780367149659 9781032183824 Routledge 17 Rijksuniversiteit Groningen University of Groningen open access
