I show that, although both matter and pattern borrowing of entire systems of Slavic or Baltic verbal prefixes is attested, grammatical aspectual categories similar to those of the donor languages do not arise in the contact languages, or develop in a way distinct from the donor languages (as in Istroromanian). This indicates that abstract grammatical oppositions such as “Slavic-style” aspect are immune to direct transfer in language contact. 2022-06-01T12:07:29Z 2022-06-01T12:07:29Z 2017 chapter ONIX_20220601_9788864536989_43 2612-7679 9788864536989 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/55860 eng Biblioteca di Studi Slavistici application/pdf Attribution 4.0 International 20544.pdf https://books.fupress.com/doi/capitoli/978-88-6453-698-9_3 Firenze University Press 10.36253/978-88-6453-698-9.03 10.36253/978-88-6453-698-9.03 bf65d21a-78e5-4ba2-983a-dbfa90962870 9788864536989 39 21 Florence open access
