In the discussed novels, various modes of mobility move the protagonists around in their former hometowns, permitting encounters with city dwellers and formerly familial urban landscapes. The texts’ portrayals of the returnees’ urban mobilities highlight the tensions between memory and the present and underline the protagonists’ sense of unbelonging and disillusionment. By focusing on African cities from the perspective of urban mobilities, the chapter contributes to the on-going postcolonialization of literary urban studies and enhances the field’s dialogue with mobilities research. 2022-08-31T10:25:49Z 2022-08-31T10:25:49Z 2023 chapter 9780367645212 9780367645243 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/58071 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781003124931_10.4324_9781003124931-18.pdf Taylor & Francis The Routledge Companion to Literary Urban Studies Routledge 10.4324/9781003124931-18 10.4324/9781003124931-18 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb 6f856023-512b-4e2c-aa37-715c7f22477d 9780367645212 9780367645243 Routledge 15 open access
