Using the prism of the histories of emotions and the senses, the chapters examine the pivotal role images have in shaping cultural, social and political reactions to the suffering of others and to the establishment of the international networks of solidarity. Questioning certain emotions assumed to underlie humanitarianism such as sympathy, empathy and compassion, they demonstrate how the experience of such emotions has shifted over time. Understanding images as emotional objects, contributors from a wide horizon of disciplines explore how their production, circulation and reception has been crucial to the perception of humanitarian crises in a long-term historical perspective. 2022-12-13T12:31:49Z 2022-12-13T12:31:49Z 2022 book ONIX_20221213_9783031008245_2 9783031008245 9783031030802 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/60127 eng Palgrave Studies in the History of Emotions application/pdf n/a 978-3-031-00824-5.pdf https://link.springer.com/978-3-031-00824-5 Springer Nature Palgrave Macmillan 10.1007/978-3-031-00824-5 10.1007/978-3-031-00824-5 6c6992af-b843-4f46-859c-f6e9998e40d5 07f61e34-5b96-49f0-9860-c87dd8228f26 5a2af7d3-9602-42be-b114-41257b6f3d80 9783031008245 9783031030802 Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) Palgrave Macmillan 186 Cham [...] [...] Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung Swiss National Science Foundation open access
