Xenophon, at least, may have been an eyewitness to the facts reported and both historians have conditioned Theramenes’ portrayal by later authors. We highlight the traits of Theramenes that fostered his identification as either the quintessence of the turncoat or as a role-model for moderate politics. Our goal is also to discuss the implications of his political stances for the configuration of Athenian democracy in the last quarter of the 5th century and how this may still help us consider our own democratic system and its flaws. 2022-12-22T16:05:46Z 2022-12-22T16:05:46Z 2022 chapter ONIX_20221222_9788855186124_27 2704-5919 9788855186124 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/60365 eng Studi e saggi application/pdf Attribution 4.0 International 10_36253_978-88-5518-612-4_06.pdf https://books.fupress.com/doi/capitoli/978-88-5518-612-4_5 Firenze University Press 10.36253/978-88-5518-612-4.06 10.36253/978-88-5518-612-4.06 bf65d21a-78e5-4ba2-983a-dbfa90962870 9788855186124 239 20 Florence open access
