History of the Americas Slavery and abolition of slavery Constitution thema EDItEUR::N History and Archaeology::NH History::NHK History of the Americas This ambitious book examines the constitutional and legal doctrines of the antislavery movement from the eve of the American Revolution to the Wilmot Proviso and the 1848 national elections. Relating political activity to constitutional thought, William M. Wiecek surveys the antislavery societies, the ideas of their individual members, and the actions of those opposed to slavery and its expansion into the territories. He shows that the idea of constitutionalism has popular origins and was not the exclusive creation of a caste of lawyers. In offering a sophisticated examination of both sides of the argument about slavery, he not only discusses court cases and statutes, but also considers a broad range of "extrajudicial" thought—political speeches and pamphlets, legislative debates and arguments. 2023-03-29T15:49:03Z 2023-03-29T15:49:03Z 1977 book ONIX_20230329_9781501726453_21 9781501726453 9781501726446 9780801410895 9781501726460 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/62035 eng application/pdf application/epub+zip Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781501726453.pdf 9781501726460.epub Cornell University Press Cornell University Press 10.7298/y8fd-ha86 10.7298/y8fd-ha86 06a447d4-1d09-460f-8b1d-3b4b09d64407 0314e571-4102-4526-b014-3ed8f2d6750a 9781501726453 9781501726446 9780801410895 9781501726460 Cornell University Press 272 Ithaca [...] Open Book Program National Endowment for the Humanities NEH open access
