What so disturbed residents that they organized counterdemonstrations, wrote hundreds of letters to local newspapers, verbally and physically harassed the protestors, and nearly rioted to stop one of the protest marches? Louise Krasniewicz reconstructs the drama surrounding the Women’s Encampment for a Future of Peace and Justice in Seneca County, New York, analyzing it as a clash both between and within communities. She shows how debates about gender and authority—including questions of morality, patriotism, women’s roles, and sexuality—came to overshadow arguments about the risks of living in a nuclear world. Vivid ethnography and vibrant social history, this work will engage readers interested in American culture, women’s studies, peace studies, and cultural anthropology. 2023-03-29T15:50:00Z 2023-03-29T15:50:00Z 1992 book ONIX_20230329_9781501719998_65 9781501719998 9781501720000 9781501727979 9780801426353 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/62079 eng application/pdf application/epub+zip Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781501719998.pdf 9781501720000.epub http://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9780801426353/nuclear-summer Cornell University Press Cornell University Press 10.7298/mpp1-5465 10.7298/mpp1-5465 06a447d4-1d09-460f-8b1d-3b4b09d64407 0314e571-4102-4526-b014-3ed8f2d6750a 9781501719998 9781501720000 9781501727979 9780801426353 Cornell University Press 278 Ithaca [...] Open Book Program National Endowment for the Humanities NEH open access
