Discussing many of the most influential and representative theories of mass culture, it ranges widely from Greek and Roman origins, through Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Ortega y Gasset, T. S. Eliot, and the theorists of the Frankfurt Institute, down to Marshall McLuhan and Daniel Bell, Brantlinger considers the many versions of negative classicism and shows how the belief in the historical inevitability of social decay—a belief today perpetuated by the mass media themselves—has become the dominant view of mass culture in our time. While not defending mass culture in its present form, Brantlinger argues that the view of culture implicit in negative classicism obscures the question of how the media can best be used to help achieve freedom and enlightenment on a truly democratic basis. 2023-03-29T15:50:57Z 2023-03-29T15:50:57Z 2016 book ONIX_20230329_9781501707643_113 9781501707643 9780801415982 9781501707636 9780801493386 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/62128 eng application/pdf application/epub+zip Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781501707643.pdf 9781501707636.epub http://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9780801415982/bread-and-circuses Cornell University Press Cornell University Press 10.7298/2zxz-wk44 10.7298/2zxz-wk44 06a447d4-1d09-460f-8b1d-3b4b09d64407 0314e571-4102-4526-b014-3ed8f2d6750a 9781501707643 9780801415982 9781501707636 9780801493386 Cornell University Press 312 Ithaca [...] Open Book Program National Endowment for the Humanities NEH open access

Lively and well written, Bread and Circuses analyzes theories that have treated mass culture as either a symptom or a cause of social decadence.
