We have found that visual framing married to affinity organization is one of the most important strengths in critical mapping, helping to communicate the concepts to stakeholders, structure our analysis, and identify places to intervene in the system to design a more sustainable future. In this book, we apply critical mapping to the challenge of identifying and compiling food DOs that are equitable, just, and resilient against ecological and economic changes; that is, the wicked solution must entail sustainable design. “Sustainable design” in this context refers to the manifestation of creative problem solving across a range of intangible and tangible design forms of varying degrees of sustainability. Using food insecurity as the wicked problem, this chapter introduces a visual framework for critically mapping a wicked solution, a diagram onto which existing sustainable DOs are charted and analyzed to identify places where designers should intervene to impact the current state of the system—in the specific case of food—and shift it toward a future of sustainable food security within the realm of equity and justice. 2023-04-24T09:47:37Z 2023-04-24T09:47:37Z 2023 chapter 9781032118895 9781032118888 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/62529 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781003222026_10.4324_9781003222026-1.pdf Taylor & Francis Critical Mapping for Sustainable Food Design Routledge 10.4324/9781003222026-1 10.4324/9781003222026-1 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb da5d771b-a79e-4c2b-917e-24269a487bfc 9949e817-5fb3-445a-bbe8-be1ed954285c 9781032118895 9781032118888 Routledge 9 University of Michigan U-M open access
