Sociology / Media Studies / Gender Studies bic Book Industry Communication::J Society & social sciences::JF Society & culture: general::JFS Social groups::JFSJ Gender studies, gender groups Though numerous studies have been conducted regarding perceived racial bias in newspaper reporting of violent crimes, few studies have focused on the intersections of race and gender in determining the extent and prominence of this coverage, and more specifically how the lack of attention to violence against women of color reinforces their invisibility in the social structure. This book provides an empirical study of media and law enforcement bias in reporting and investigating homicides of African American women compared with their white counterparts. The author discusses the symbiotic relationship between media coverage and the response from law enforcement to victims of color, particularly when these victims are reported missing and presumed to be in danger by their loved ones. Just as the media are effective in helping to increase police response, law enforcement officials reach out to news outlets to solicit help from the public in locating a missing person or solving a murder. However, a deeply troubling disparity in reporting the disappearance and homicides of female victims reflects racial inequality and institutionalized racism in the social structure that need to be addressed. It is this disparity this important study seeks to solve. 2023-07-27T14:00:38Z 2023-07-27T14:00:38Z 2015 book ONIX_20230727_9781628952377_84 9781628952377 9781611861785 9781609174651 9781628962376 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/64193 eng application/pdf application/epub+zip Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International 9781628952377.pdf 9781628952377.epub https://msupress.org/9781611861785/youre-deadso-what/ Michigan State University Press 10.14321/9781611861785 10.14321/9781611861785 cec0b1ff-364d-433a-a95f-ffc41a22e40e b5941080-3f20-4864-95c6-753acff7c9f4 9781628952377 9781611861785 9781609174651 9781628962376 Big Ten Open Books East Lansing [...] Big Ten Open Books Big Ten Open Books — Gender and Sexuality Studies Collection Big Ten Academic Alliance open access
