Founded by British Anglican missionaries in the 1860s, the UMCA worked among refugees from the Indian Ocean slave trade on Zanzibar and among disparate communities on the adjacent Tanzanian mainland. Prichard illustrates how the mission’s unique theology and the demographics of its adherents produced cohorts of African Christian women who, in the face of linguistic and cultural dissimilarity, used the daily performance of a certain set of “civilized” Christian values and affective relationships to evangelize to new inquirers. The UMCA’s “sisters in spirit” ultimately forged a united spiritual community that spanned discontiguous mission stations across Tanzania and Zanzibar, incorporated diverse ethnolinguistic communities, and transcended generations. Focusing on the emotional and personal dimensions of their lives and on the relationships of affective spirituality that grew up among them, Prichard tells stories that are vital to our understanding of Tanzanian history, the history of religion and Christian missions in Africa, the development of cultural nationalisms, and the intellectual histories of African women. 2023-07-27T14:00:55Z 2023-07-27T14:00:55Z 2017 book ONIX_20230727_9781628952926_93 9781628952926 9781609175221 9781611862409 9781628962925 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/64202 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International 9781628952926.pdf https://msupress.org/9781611862409/sisters-in-spirit/ Michigan State University Press 10.14321/9781611862409 10.14321/9781611862409 cec0b1ff-364d-433a-a95f-ffc41a22e40e b5941080-3f20-4864-95c6-753acff7c9f4 9781628952926 9781609175221 9781611862409 9781628962925 Big Ten Open Books East Lansing [...] Big Ten Open Books Big Ten Open Books — Gender and Sexuality Studies Collection Big Ten Academic Alliance open access
