Political Rhetoric/ Memoir/ Gay Studies bic Book Industry Communication::J Society & social sciences::JF Society & culture: general::JFS Social groups::JFSJ Gender studies, gender groups Spanning a historical period that begins with women’s exclusion from university debates and continues through their participation in coeducational intercollegiate competitions, Debating Women highlights the crucial role that debating organizations played as women sought to access the fruits of higher education in the United States and United Kingdom. Despite various obstacles, women transformed forests, parlors, dining rooms, ocean liners, classrooms, auditoriums, and prisons into vibrant spaces for ritual argument. There, they not only learned to speak eloquently and argue persuasively but also used debate to establish a legacy, explore difference, engage in intercultural encounter, and articulate themselves as citizens. These debaters engaged with the issues of the day, often performing, questioning, and occasionally refining norms of gender, race, class, and nation. In tracing their involvement in an activity at the heart of civic culture, Woods demonstrates that debating women have much to teach us about the ongoing potential for debate to move arguments, ideas, and people to new spaces. 2023-07-27T14:01:02Z 2023-07-27T14:01:02Z 2018 book ONIX_20230727_9781628953381_96 9781628953381 9781611862959 9781609175757 9781628963380 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/64205 eng application/pdf application/epub+zip Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International 9781628953381.pdf 9781628953381.epub https://msupress.org/9781611862959/debating-women/ Michigan State University Press 10.14321/j.ctv3c0trt 10.14321/j.ctv3c0trt cec0b1ff-364d-433a-a95f-ffc41a22e40e b5941080-3f20-4864-95c6-753acff7c9f4 9781628953381 9781611862959 9781609175757 9781628963380 Big Ten Open Books East Lansing [...] Big Ten Open Books Big Ten Open Books — Gender and Sexuality Studies Collection Big Ten Academic Alliance open access
