While many point to China's ecological civilization programs as a new paradigm for global environmental governance, Jesse Rodenbiker argues that ecological redlining extends the reach of the authoritarian state. Although Chinese urban sustainability initiatives have driven millions of citizens from their land and housing, Rodenbiker shows that these migrants are not passive subjects of state policy. Instead, they creatively navigate resettlement processes in pursuit of their own benefit. However, their resistance is limited by varied forms of state-backed infrastructural violence. Through extensive fieldwork with scientists, urban planners, and everyday citizens in southwestern China, Ecological States exposes the ways in which the scientific logics and practices fundamental to China's green urbanization have solidified state power and contributed to dispossession and social inequality This book is freely available in an open access edition through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation. 2023-08-03T09:20:35Z 2023-08-03T09:20:35Z 2023 book ONIX_20230803_9781501769023_10 9781501769023 9781501769009 9781501768996 9781501769016 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/74773 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International 9781501769023.pdf http://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501768996/ecological-states Cornell University Press Cornell University Press 06a447d4-1d09-460f-8b1d-3b4b09d64407 aa4a0306-f5fb-450e-bcfb-ecec4f18dd04 9781501769023 9781501769009 9781501768996 9781501769016 Cornell University Press 264 Ithaca [...] open access
