But despite the lack of trenches, camps and enclosures, other traces of army life and organization are preserved. In this chapter, it is suggested that the so-called garrison in the Viking-era city of Birka, Sweden, constitutes an interesting counterpart to the camps. Despite the differences between them, not least in terms of temporality and relation to the surrounding region, a more detailed comparison of the archaeological source material also shows important similarities. The structural and material remains of the garrison are here put into context and questions are raised concerning differences in opportunities and needs for a martial organisation operating at home compared to the challenges facing an army acting away from home. 2023-11-28T11:06:37Z 2023-11-28T11:06:37Z 2023 chapter 9781032389493 9781032389530 https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/85644 eng application/pdf Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International 9781003347682_10.4324_9781003347682-16.pdf Taylor & Francis Viking Camps Routledge 10.4324/9781003347682-16 10.4324/9781003347682-16 7b3c7b10-5b1e-40b3-860e-c6dd5197f0bb ce31e1dd-1d3e-4136-99a6-c5950f137e03 96d9ad63-1967-4a66-87d4-739c095ebc2e 9781032389493 9781032389530 Routledge 21 University of Liverpool Universidad de Liverpool open access
