Περίληψη: | For over three centuries Piero della Francesca’s Flagellation has sparked great interest among scholars and academics all around the world who have built complex demonstration plans in order to reveal its true meaning, in attempt to identify historical events that could form a correct chronology. The intent of these pages is to insert the painting in the centuries-old iconographic tradition, an essential reference to Piero and his commissioners, that can clarify its meaning. Hints to the Montefeltro dukes’ conspiracies and joyful or unpleasant events, or Costantinopoli’s fall, alongside the call to the crusade against the Turks, have been set aside. It will now be possible to go back to enjoy the painting in its absolute formal perfection.
