520 |a Biology of Stress in Fish, Volume 35 of the Fish Physiology series, provides a general overview of stress biology, including the most recent advances in the field. It starts with a general discussion of stress--what is stress, the nature of the physiological stress response, and factors that affect the stress response. Moving forward, biotic and abiotic factors that cause variation in the stress response are considered. The volume then discusses how a stress response is generated and controlled, leading to a discussion of effects on physiological and organismal function and performance. The conclusion considers applications regarding assessment of stress, animal welfare, and model species. Stress is an inherent attribute of life. How a fish responds to various stresssors is critical to its survival and the population's reproductive capacity. As such, response to stressors is critical information that influences almost all studies on experimental fish biology and fish management practices. Thus, researchers across the entire suite of disciplines that study fish or fishery biology must understand stress and its effect on the individual and the population. Biology of Stress in Fish helps provide this critical understanding.
