Based on the review of international literature the consumption of resources (water, energy, detergents) is presented for each one of the aforementioned alternatives. Then, the influence on dishwashing of socio-economic (size and structure of households, income) and behavioural factors is examined. Finally, best practices aiming at reducing the environmental impacts of dishwashing, are presented and discussed. Σκοπός του παρόντος κεφαλαίου είναι η παρουσίαση των δύο εναλλακτικών μεθόδων πλυσίματος των οικιακών σκευών εστίασης (πιάτων, ποτηριών, μαγειρικών σκευών, κ.λπ.), δηλαδή είτε του πλυσίματος στο χέρι ή της χρήσης ενός οικιακού πλυντηρίου πιάτων. Με βάση τη διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, παρουσιάζεται η κατανάλωση των πόρων (νερό, απορρυπαντικά, ενέργεια) που απαιτούνται σε κάθε μία από τις δύο παραπάνω εναλλακτικές επιλογές. Στη συνέχεια γίνεται εκτίμηση των συνεπακόλουθων περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων.
